Here’s a quick and easy summer crochet pattern you can wear to the beach, pool, or anywhere really.
The stitching for the pattern is somewhat lacy, so you can use just about any yarn weight under a medium (size 4) and crochet a fairly lightweight garment. I recommend using cotton thread for this , but you can well use whatever fiber you want.
For an even lighter/lacier poncho, use a fine yarn, or even crochet thread (you will definitely need to adjust your hook size down 2-3 mm if you use a lighter yarn/thread).
To create the stripes….I did nothing. Use a variegated, or self-striping yarn and you’ll be set.
That’s about all for the pattern notes, as I covered everything else in the tutorial (linked below). To support my work, you can purchase the PDF pattern or watch the tutorial a few times and maybe send it to another crocheter or two. That’d be awesome, thank you 🙂

Yarn: I used a size 2 sport yarn to crochet the poncho in the pattern photo. You can switch out the yarn and use a lighter, or heavier weight, but you may need to adjust your hook size. Swatch using the recommended hook size on your yarn label and adjust as needed to create your desired fabric drape.
To create the striped look, I used a variegated yarn.
How much yarn will you need? There is a free tutorial available on my YouTube channel that covers how to calculate your yarn needs for any garment size. Type “How Much Yarn, Mode Bespoke” in the YouTube search bar to access the tutorial.
Construction: You’ll need to crochet 2 panels that are sewn together to make this poncho. The initial chain determines the width of the panel, and each row adds to the length. You’ll be working with a 3-row repeat throughout the length of the fabric. Finish each panel with a bind off, then sew the panels together.
Swatch: Before beginning your garment, make a 4 inch square (10 cm) swatch of the stitch. Adjust your hook size as needed to create your desired fabric.
Measurements:
Panel Width: Measure from your shoulder to your elbow.
Arm: Measure around the widest part of your arm.
Garment Length: Measure from your hip to your shoulder, over the shoulder, and down to your lower back.
Multiples: odd numbers.
Blocking: This is totally optional, and not necessary as the construction of this garment eliminates the fabric curl once the project is complete.

TS: Insert your hook behind the top leg of the vertical stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Leave the loop on your hook.
YS : Yarn over and skip the next available vertical stitch.
Pattern: .
You will need to crochet 2 of these panels, so keep track of your stitch and row counts.
Chain a length equal to your panel length in odd multiples.
Foundation: Insert your hook into the second stitch of the chain, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Leave this loop on your hook (you should have two loops on your hook at this point). Insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat until you have cast on one loop for every stitch of the chain.
Complete a RP.
Row 1: KS into every stitch of the row.
Complete a RP.

Complete a RP.
Rows 3 & 4 : KS into every stitch of the row.
Repeat Rows 2-4 until your fabric is about 1 inch (3 cm) from your desired Garment Length.
Bind off: Complete a repetition of Rows 2 and 3. Bind off on row 4:
KS into the vertical stitch. Once you have 2 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through both loops to close the stitch as a single crochet (SC). Repeat the KS/SC pattern until you complete the row, then SC into the final stitch.
Chain 1 and cut your yarn.
Sewing .
Line up your panels as shown in the image on the left .
Using your stitch markers (or safety pins), mark the shoulder line on each panel, then pin the front and back panes together (along the “sew” lines in the image). Leave the center unpinned, as this will be the neckline.
Try your poncho on and adjust your pins as needed to mark your adjusted sew lines, then sew the panels together.
For those that want to sew the panels along the sides (under the arm to create “sleeves”), take your arm measurement and divide it in half. Fold your poncho along the shoulder line then mark the halved sleeve measurement along the sides of the fabric.
Make sure you try the poncho on and adjust your arm holed before sewing.
Weave in any remaining tails and you are finished! 😀
