This is one super-chunky, thick, and soft crochet hat for all of my friends that live in cold winter weather places!

The pattern calls for size #6, super-bulky yarn BUT you can use any yarn you want 🙂 In the pattern, you will also see a skein of medium yarn listed for the brim. This again, is up to you. I prefer to use medium yarn for the brim to keep it from being too bulky, but it’s a personal preference.

If you do chose to use a different yarn, here are some suggested hook size adjustments, but please feel free to try different gauges and use whichever one you like best:

  • Size #1 yarn, use 4.25 mm hook
  • Size #3 or 3.5 yarn, use a 5 mm hook
  • Size #4 yarn, use a 5 mm or 5.5 mm hook
  • Size #5 bulky yarn, use 6 mm hook.
  • Size #6 super bulky yarn, use 9mm hook.

If you’d like some yarn suggestions, head to the bottom of the post. I’ll also link the shop pages where you can find each yarn.

Here are the materials you’ll need to complete this pattern:

Yarn: 2 skeins of any light or medium size yarn. One skein in each of the two colors you want to use. Color 1, will be used for the brim.

Yarn: 1 skein of a medium-sized yarn for the brim.

1 skein of super bulky, size 6 yarn for the hat

             (appx. 74 yds/ 67 m for an adult hat).

Hook:  5.5 mm, for brim

             9 mm, for hat

Additional materials: scissors, measuring tape & yarn needles that fit each of your yarns. Pom Pom, optional.

Notes: This pattern makes a thick, chunky winter hat. For a more lightweight hat, substitute the chunky yarn for a size 3 or 4 medium yarn. This hat is worked in the round. The body is crocheted in one size, and without decreases. You cinch the top to close the hat.
