Originally, this was intended as a cute Valentine’s Day gift bag, but my kiddo saw the finished bag and decided it was her new purse. So…here is the Paper Airplane general purpose bag! (or purse, if you wish)
For those of you “enrolled” in the Tunisian Crochet Course (it’s free on YouTube, more on this in a minute), this is the next step project following our 2-color Tunisian Heart Cozy. In this pattern, you will have to navigate a 3-color chart, as well as practice color-stranded crochet. I highly recommend watching the tutorial before working through this pattern, as it covers how to read the chart and how to work 3 colors simultaneously.
Wondering about the Tunisian Crochet Course? It’s a free series of videos on the Mode Bespoke YouTube channel in which we cover the basics, learn new stitches, and create one-of-a-kind projects that get you practicing all your newly-acquired Tunisian Crochet skills! I post two videos a week: one stitch tutorial (on Mondays), and a project tutorial (on Thursdays). Just subscribe to the Mode Bespoke channel and you are ready to go!
What you’ll need to make the Paper Airplane bag:
Yarn: Medium weight yarn, so anything #3 or #4 will work great!
Hook: 5.5 mm Tunisian
Additional materials: Scissors, needle (any needle you can fit your yarn through will work).
Sizing: approximately 8.5 x 9 inches (21.5 x 23 cm) |
For this pattern, I’ve made the chart available separately, for those of you that just want the chart and not the full pattern. The full pattern includes a chart, so you do not need to purchase the chart separately.

Bind-off
Finish the RP for the last row of your project, then insert your hook into the second stitch of the row (as if you were working a TSR) and single crochet: pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops on your hook. Insert your hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, and single crochet. Repeat until you have crocheted one single crochet for every stitch of the row. Once you finish, cut your yarn and weave in all of the yarn ends before sewing the cozy closed.
Sew
Line up the corners of the bag (so that the narrow sides overlap), and sew along the side and bottom to close the bag.
Handle
Top Border: Single crochet 2 rows along the top of the bag, in the round, beginning on the stitch directly after the side seam. Do not cut the yarn, as you will be adding 3 additional rows for the handles.
Handle: Place stitch markers on stitch numbers 8, 24, 40 and 56. Single crochet to stitch number 8, then chain 16. Skip to stitch number 24 and single crochet. Single crochet into every stitch until you reach stitch number 40. Chain 16, then skip to stitch number 56 and single crochet. Single crochet in each stitch to the end of the round.
Single crochet along the top of the bag until you reach the chain. Single crochet 20 into the chain space, then continue to single crochet into every stitch until you reach the second chain space. Single crochet 20 into the chain space, then continue to single crochet until you complete the round.
Single crochet into every stitch of round, then cut your yarn and weave in any remaining ends.
